Field 03 · Field Archive · Cultural source material

The books, films and objects behind the studio's point of view.

Dossiers hold the commercial evidence; the archive holds the intellectual source material. Twenty-two objects — five books, seventeen films — kept because each one changed how a problem gets read. Drag the shelf horizontally, lift an object, open it as a field notebook. Arrange the sequence by hand and it stays — in this browser, and in any link you share.

Books5

  • Meditations

    B—01

    Marcus Aurelius · c. 180 · Philosophy · Rome · 5h

The oldest operating manual for holding judgement steady while events refuse to cooperate.

  • The Beginning of Infinity

    B—02

    David Deutsch · 2011 · Science · Oxford · 13h

Explanation, not prediction, is the engine of progress. Good explanations are hard to vary — and that is the test.

  • Gödel, Escher, Bach

    B—03

    Douglas Hofstadter · 1979 · Science · Bloomington · 25h

Self-reference, recursion and the strange loop through which systems become aware of themselves.

  • The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

    B—04

    Thomas Kuhn · 1962 · Science · Cambridge MA · 5h 30m

Paradigms do not fall to better evidence. They fall when the anomalies become unbearable.

  • Antifragile

    B—05

    Nassim Nicholas Taleb · 2012 · Philosophy · New York · 12h

Design for the shock you cannot forecast. Optionality outperforms accuracy.

Films17

  • The Tree of Life

    F—01

    Film · 2011 · Cinema · Texas · 2h 19m

Scale as an emotional instrument: a family kitchen and cosmological time given equal weight in one cut.

  • La Grande Bellezza

    F—02

    Film · 2013 · Cinema · Rome · 2h 21m

A study of taste, decay and the cost of spectating your own life.

  • Annie Hall

    F—03

    Film · 1977 · Cinema · New York · 1h 33m

Structure broken on purpose — address the audience, split the frame, break the chronology, and the story gets truer.

  • Manhattan

    F—04

    Film · 1979 · Design · New York · 1h 36m

Monochrome as discipline. Remove colour and composition has nowhere to hide.

  • Barry Lyndon

    F—05

    Film · 1975 · Cinema · Ireland · 3h 5m

Patience rendered as craft: available light, held frames, and a protagonist undone by social systems he never learned to read.

  • A Single Man

    F—06

    Film · 2009 · Design · Los Angeles · 1h 39m

Grief handled with total control of surface — colour temperature doing the emotional work.

  • Requiem for a Dream

    F—07

    Film · 2000 · Cinema · Brooklyn · 1h 42m

Compulsion loops filmed as editing rhythm. The structure is the addiction.

  • Oldboy

    F—08

    Film · 2003 · Cinema · Seoul · 2h

Revenge staged as a single unbroken corridor — one direction, no exits, everything paid for later.

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

    F—09

    Film · 1998 · Cinema · Las Vegas · 1h 58m

Reporting from inside the distortion instead of pretending to stand outside it.

  • Pulp Fiction

    F—10

    Film · 1994 · Cinema · Los Angeles · 2h 34m

Chronology treated as a material to be cut, not a rule to obey.

  • Enter the Void

    F—11

    Film · 2009 · Cinema · Tokyo · 2h 41m

Point of view pushed past its limit until perspective itself becomes the subject.

  • Drive

    F—12

    Film · 2011 · Design · Los Angeles · 1h 40m

Silence as leverage. The character with the least dialogue holds the most power in the frame.

  • The Sting

    F—13

    Film · 1973 · Cinema · Chicago · 2h 9m

A long con is just a strategy with impeccable stagecraft and no visible seams.

  • F—14

    Film · 1963 · Cinema · Rome · 2h 18m

A film about the impossibility of making the film, which becomes the film.

  • Spirited Away

    F—15

    Film · 2001 · Design · Tokyo · 2h 5m

A whole economy invented in full — with rules, labour, currency and consequence — and never explained aloud.

  • Wie im Himmel

    F—16

    Film · 2004 · Cinema · Norrland · 2h 12m

Excellence introduced into a small closed community, and everything it disturbs on the way in.

  • Alfie

    F—17

    Film · 2004 · Cinema · New York · 1h 46m

Charm audited in full, then billed. The account arrives at the end, in private.

Provenance

Every face on this shelf is an original I.O.V plate: a monochrome specimen photographed and graded in-studio for each title, book and film alike, so the shelf reads as one bound set. No publisher jacket or distributor key art is reproduced, and no cover is loaded from a third-party service. Spine and fore-edge tones are authored by hand from each plate. Titles, credits and editions are cited for identification; the works themselves remain the property of their authors, directors, publishers and rights holders.

Every object carries one outward reference — an IMDb title page for films, a bookseller lookup by ISBN-13 for books, so the link lands on the exact edition held. Each reference was checked against its registry and confirmed to resolve on 2026-08-10.
